Looking at the two cars involved in this accident, it's hard to believe anyone survived. The State Patrol said a man driving this Mercedes westbound on US 2 passed another vehicle illegally and struck a pick-up head-on. The Mercedes driver died, but his passenger, a pregnant woman, survived. She and the three men in the pick-up were all taken to hospitals with unknown injuries. Witnesses said the Mercedes was driving erratically before the crash.<br />
I have a new motto now whenever I'm in a car: Pay attention in every direction. I have read about more and more head on collisions caused by illegal passing, DUI, health conditions, and sleepy drivers.</div>

Tail Lights is a company that was born by accident. Literally. Despite using reflective gear, in 2009, founder Sami Gros and her horse were struck by a car while riding in an equestrian neighborhood. Failing to find a better product for night time equestrian safety, Sami designed and built the first LED light source for horses. Thus Tail Lights was born, a <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">colorful fun way to be seen at night while riding.</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> </span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Description
Tail Lights for horses help you be visible while riding in low light. It is a revolutionary product that will set the standard for equine safety. Tail Lights is a safe, light weight, highly visible (over a 1/2 mile on single rider mode), colorful way to warn motorists of a horse and riders position. With soft rope light lights that move with the tail, the horse is as comfortable wearing it as the rider will be knowing that they are well visible in poor lighting situations. </span></div>

Today, when the Seattle Seahawks take the field at Century Link field, the 12th man will attempt to set a new world record as the loudest crowd roar in the world.<br />
<br />Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records will be in Seattle today to measure the sounds of the fans at Century Link stadium as the Hawks take on the San Francisco 49ers in this weekends Sunday Night Football game. The 12th man will have to generate more than 131.76 decibels in sound to beat the record set in 2011 at a soccer game in Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul, Turkey.</span><br />

If you read my first post, <a href="http://scubadoobydoo.blogspot.com/2013/05/when-octopus-attack.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">When Octopus Attack</a>, you already know that these posts aren't about octopus attacks, but more about the natural behavior of underwater creatures.<br />
<br />
A few years ago, my husband and I were fortunate enough to travel to Indonesia for a few weeks of scuba diving. We spent the first half of our trip diving from the <a href="http://www.rajaampat.liveaboarddiving.net/#Ondina" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">SMY Ondina</a> in the waters of Raja Ampat. For the second half of the trip, we traveled to North Sulawesi, and spent the remainder of the trip diving with the guides of the <a href="http://www.kasawari-lembeh.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kasawari Lembeh Dive Resort</a>. We were told that we would be "muck diving," which doesn't sound like very much fun to most people, but to Pacific Northwest divers, we spend most of our time muck diving, so we were excited!<br />
<br />
Lembeh Strait is home to some of the worlds most amazing underwater critters. With the right guide, or a good eye, you'll find pygmy seahorses, wunderpus, stargazers, all kinds of frogfish including the hairy frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, angler fish, spiny devil, schools of file fish, and so much more.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMOtJib46iKgtA4fCs1HCmvw3CKNzy1qJShxdEG6weLjGgXaeaYb4BbdqYwkHwD3TcsHIUo8_NNIuYPhneUpLMF_OiempIrU7JyrheTKGmPLNORNFE4F1mGq-axjw2k2US9aRnHq3FQWQ/s1600/coconutOctopus007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Coconut Octopus" border="0" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMOtJib46iKgtA4fCs1HCmvw3CKNzy1qJShxdEG6weLjGgXaeaYb4BbdqYwkHwD3TcsHIUo8_NNIuYPhneUpLMF_OiempIrU7JyrheTKGmPLNORNFE4F1mGq-axjw2k2US9aRnHq3FQWQ/s320/coconutOctopus007.jpg" title="Coconut Octopus" width="320" /></a><br />
Coconut Octopus</td></tr>
<tr>
</tr>
</tbody></table>
One of the cutest creatures we found was this feisty octopus. They usually bury themselves below the sand, leaving their eyes just above the sand so they can observe the world around them. We spotted this small coconut octopus on our own as it was carrying this clam shell around, and he entertained us for around 15 minutes as we enjoyed an extra long safety stop.<br />
<br />
This octopus was around the size of a small lime, but it packed a huge attitude. When it noticed us, the octopus logged itself inside the shell and pulled it closed around itself, peaking out to check on us once in awhile. <br />
<br />
Realizing we weren't going to go away, the octopus dropped the shell and put on a beautiful show hiding under the sand, blowing sand at us, going through several color changes, and hiding in plain sight by blending in with whatever drifted by. Eventually, we waved goodbye to this spunky little octopus and made our way to the surface. We will never forget this adorable little octopus.<br />
<br />
If you are fortunate enough to spot sea life in their natural habitat, please remember that their behavior is usually meant to scare you so that you won't bother them. Although they are harmless, respect them and enjoy them with your eyes or your camera, not your hands. They will live a little longer, and future divers will have an opportunity to enjoy them as well.</div><br />

Found this video shared by a friend on Facebook. Aries Head Films produced this video on August 29th, just four days after the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA). They pair parts of the onstage performance by Robin <span style="font-size: 16px; text-align: start;">Thicke </span>and Miley Cyrus with previously recorded footage from an episode of Star Trek.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/k6Lb3kFwJRQ?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This compilation is perfect, capturing the emotions that most of us experienced when watching the VMA performance. Eventually, as the crew watches this performance of "Blurred Lines," the entire bridge crew goes mad. What else do you expect from a song called "Blurred Lines?"</div>
<br /></div>

Here's a topic that's near and dear to my heart. I've been working for the Washington State Patrol for more than eleven years, and I love my job! It's rewarding, challenging, and usually fairly entertaining. The agency understands the value of keeping up with current technology trends, and allows me to keep my skills current. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMwnggHvqJbRSjLpeRH51Xq2GXULFmJSsNmXN3SB1dPx5Kxfpos7dDzZqXwAbCU2r1TZNfx9koYFz-S6ivJwHCsoPOAbXWTBgkktglLHT2vNk75lxLF5p2NXcV9sOowNSN907mhvt7-w/s1600/wsp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Washington State Patrol Badge" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMwnggHvqJbRSjLpeRH51Xq2GXULFmJSsNmXN3SB1dPx5Kxfpos7dDzZqXwAbCU2r1TZNfx9koYFz-S6ivJwHCsoPOAbXWTBgkktglLHT2vNk75lxLF5p2NXcV9sOowNSN907mhvt7-w/s1600/wsp.jpg" title="Washington State Patrol Badge" /></a>Last week, the agency posted a new <a href="http://www.wsp.wa.gov/information/releases/2013_archive/mr082813.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Media Release</a>. We have more than 300 openings for troopers. If you've ever wanted to be in law enforcement, this is a great time to see if you've got what it takes to be a trooper. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The patrol is conducting its Phase I testing at Lynnwood High School on Saturday, September 7th. Phase I testing consists of a physical fitness test and a written test. Once you pass Phase I testing, you can advance to the next phase of testing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Check-in begins at 7:30 AM. If you are excited about law enforcement opportunities, give it a try. You can find more information on the application, testing locations, and minimum requirements on our <a href="http://www.wsp.wa.gov/employment/trooper.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">agency website</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're interested in other opportunities working for the Washington State Patrol, you can find a list of all of our current openings on the states <a href="http://www.careers.wa.gov/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">career's web site</a>.</div>

Price called 911 several times - and apparently her boyfriend, as well - to report that she was stopped in one of the left lanes on I-405 southbound in Bellevue, Washington State Patrol Trooper Chris Webb said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Both a trooper and the boyfriend were on their way at about 4:30 a.m. when a semi struck the woman's car and pushed it off the left shoulder. Price was alive when medics arrived, but unfortunately died before making it to the hospital. </div>

"We had a trooper en route to the scene and then we got calls the vehicle had been struck," Webb said.</div>

Price's boyfriend arrived in the aftermath of the crash. Her family in West Seattle was too emotional to speak, but said Price is leaving behind a twin sister.</div>

Troopers said she followed the advice most people hear about what to do after a collision - stay in your car. In this case, though, because her car was in the middle of a busy freeway, investigators said it might have been better to either move the car, or wait somewhere off the road.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Price reported to dispatchers that she believed her car was disabled, Webb said. "We assume she at least had her lights on, although there is front damage to the vehicle, which maybe caused her headlights to be off," Webb added.</div>

Espresso...noun: a strong black coffee made by forcing steam through ground coffee beans.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Seems simple enough right? Wrong! I don't drink it, but my husband does, and it still surprises me when an employee who supposedly specializes in everything coffee says EXPRESSO. Seriously? Lift your head, look around the store, and read the menu. There is no X in espresso, no matter how many shots you have to add.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
up, call the love of your life, and confess your sins. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Almost every Tuesday and Thursday, at 7:20 am PST, <a href="http://www.twitter.com/jackienation" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jackie</a> and <a href="http://www.twitter.com/TheBenderNation" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bender</a> host a bit they call <a href="http://www.kissfmseattle.com/pages/form_to_email_promos/war_of_the_roses/entry_form.php" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">War of the Roses</a>. Sometimes it's sad, sometimes it's scary, and sometimes it's funny, but it is always entertaining.<br />
<br />
Here's how it works. If you suspect your significant other is cheating on you, all you have to do is talk to them. What a novel idea, communicate. Oh, wait, you don't communicate, you don't know what problem resolution is, you don't know the first thing about relationships. Instead of communicating, you decide to air your dirty laundry on a radio show. You visit Jackie and Bender's web site, share a little information with them, and then let them make a call...badabing, badaboom, your cheating significant other confesses everything on the radio for the whole world to hear; courtesy of <a href="http://www.iheart.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">iHeartRADIO</a> of course.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.kissfmseattle.com/pages/form_to_email_promos/war_of_the_roses/entry_form.php"></a><a href="http://content.clearchannel.com/cc-common/mlib/11337/04/11337_1367339973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="War of the Roses Submit Info Link" border="0" height="91" src="http://content.clearchannel.com/cc-common/mlib/11337/04/11337_1367339973.jpg" title="War of the Roses Submit Info Link" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">War of the Roses Submit Info Link</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you've never listened to the show, give it a try. Jackie and Bender and all of their support staff put on a great show full of laughs and interesting guests. I'm at work during the War of the Roses bit, so I started listening on my iPhone using the iHeartRADIO app.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://static.iheart.com/web/res/516/img/footer/ftr_logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="iHeartRADIO" border="0" src="http://static.iheart.com/web/res/516/img/footer/ftr_logo.png" title="iHeartRADIO" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">iHeartRADIO</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My favorite War of the Roses was a story about a man dating a woman for a year, and never being invited to her home. She told her "boyfriend" that her home was a complicated place because she and her husband lived there together before he died while serving in the military in Iraq, and she wasn't ready to let anyone new in the house. Turns out her husband was not dead. In fact, he was alive, healthy, and living with her in their home. Once she realized what was happening, she actually thought it was OK to turn things around and ask her "boyfriend" why he was doing this to her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.allaccess.com/assets/img/editorial/raw/ja/jackiebender.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.allaccess.com/assets/img/editorial/raw/ja/jackiebender.JPG" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Jackie & Bender<br />
KISS 106.1 FM</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Some of the stories are truly unbelievable, seriously, they sound scripted. It doesn't really matter though because the show is entertaining. If you've never listened to the bit, give it a try. Today, they've got <a href="http://www.kissfmseattle.com/articles/kiss-fm-war-of-the-roses-457095/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">720 past episodes</a> up on their web site, and they add two more almost every week.<br />

<span style="color: red;">Do not take your kids to this movie!</span> We're the Millers is hilarious, but definitely inappropriate for children. It is rated R for very crude sexual content, pervasive language, drugs, and brief graphic nudity.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This New Line Cinema comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis is chock full of action, adventure, a little romance, and a whole lot of comedy from start to finish. David Burke (Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer with no life ambition or drive. When David is robbed, he loses everything; his drug money, his pot, and his personal life savings. He is forced to go from small-time pot dealer to big-time pot smuggler when he finds himself in serious debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms).<br />
<br />
David recruits Rose (Aniston), a cynical stripper, Kenny (Will Poulter), a socially awkward teen, and Casey (Emma Roberts), a tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen to help him create a fake family that will help him get the mother load of pot across the border from Mexico, and back to home to Brad. <br />
<br />
Want to know what happens next? You'll have to see the movie... I can tell you that the show takes some unexpected twists and turns, and may even shock you.<br />

David's fake family is joined by Don (Nick Offerman), Edie (Kathryn Hahn), and Melissa (Molly Quinn) Fitzgerald, RV enthusiasts, and a handful of other well-known actors. The entire Fitzgerald's family amps up the overall comedy value of the show. Don and Edie play their parts so well, I found myself laughing so hard I had to wipe away tears. <br />
<br />
Rawson Marshall Thurber, director, did a good job creating back stories for each of the characters. You may fall in love with most of them, maybe even cheer for what you might normally call the bad guys. The entire cast is completely committed to making their role believable, but certainly no one was more committed than Jennifer Aniston. I predict that hundreds of thousands of men and women will buy this movie just so that they can play and replay the various stripper scenes. Thank you Bob Fisher and Steve Faber for creating this extremely funny movie.<br />

My husband loves to watch video reviews by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/hickok45" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hickok45</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/nutnfancy" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">NutNFancy</a>. Both of these men have loyal followers, ranking them the top two small arms expert reviewers all over the world. If you want to know anything about anything related to weapons and their accessories, you really need to check out their YouTube videos. </div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Occasionally, and far too often if you ask his fans, NutNFancy literally shifts gears and publishes a review on a motorcycle or a motorcycle accessory. Recently, my husband watched a NutNFancy review about a lifesaving piece of equipment. Anyone that decides to ride a motorcycle or a horse should know about these air vests. Actually, if you plan on riding anything that provides little to no protection to your body while also exposing you to high speed, high impact injuries, you should consider investing in one of these vests.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Do NOT attempt any falls using these vests!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This first video captures the size and impact of the <a href="http://www.air-vest.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hit-Air</a> vest on an equestrian rider. Sam Watson, an International Event Rider, describes how light the vest is, and says that the jacket is quickly forgotten by the riders. He explains that he decided to try the vest after experiencing a bad fall from his horse sidelined him for a while. His next fall was on hard ground, and the vest saved him from all pain the day of days following the fall. In fact, he was able to get on his next horse and continue competing, something he wasn't able to do in the past.

<br />
This video does a fantastic job of highlighting the <a href="http://www.pointtwousa.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Point Two</a> air vest with a few controlled falls over jumps. Despite the controlled falls, the vest clearly shows its value. Definitely worth the price of the vest. Horse racing jockeys believe this is the first true advancement in riding safety gear since the development of the riding helmet.<br />

This video is a demonstration of the Hit-Air vest used by both a motorcyclist and a scooter rider. Once again, a clear demonstration of the value of these air vests. It seems motorcyclists are fairly evenly split between the Point Two air jacket and the Hit-Air vest, with NutNFancy preferring the Hit-Air vest.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're looking for a solid protection solution, something to keep you safe without interfering with your freedom of movement or comfort, these two companies have vests that will meet your needs. There are plenty of reviews out there that tell you how these vests work and how easy they are to maintain. If you have a preference, or prefer a different company's vest or jacket, feel free to post a comment.</div>

I love photography, but have never come close to mastering the use of my camera. Every now and then I manage to take a photo that is worth sharing. I understand composition, aperture, and f-stop, but the only one I can actually apply when the camera is in my hands is composition. Since joining Google +, I stumbled upon a few interesting forms of photography I just have to share.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Photography originally started as the process of capturing light on light-sensitive paper. Today, digital sensors capture the light and store it in digital format. Both forms of photography respond to changes in shutter speed and adding or removing external light. Leaving your shutter open longer creates lighting effects that can only be imagined by the human eye.
</div>
<br />
<span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large; text-align: center;">L</span><span style="color: blue; font-size: large; text-align: center;">IGHT</span><span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large; text-align: center;"> P</span><span style="color: blue; font-size: large; text-align: center;">HOTOGRAPHY</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are dozens of different kinds of light photography; light painting, light graffiti, and light art performance photography. Regardless of the name, light photography "is a technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source, ...or images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources." Photographers use a slow, one second or more, shutter speed, and a moving light source to illuminate patterns or a picture by shining the light directly into a camera lens. A similar effect can be achieved by moving the camera around.

There are a few different names for this type of photography; liquid, splash, water, and any combination of these names, but the common thread is the use of liquid, a camera, and strobes. This form of photography pairs the hi-speed stop action of strobes to "freeze liquids and create stunning water photography images."

This is amazing footage of a couple of snorkelers, a bunch of seal, seagulls, a large school of fish, and two large humpback whales. Shot using a GoPro Hero camera, I think the snorkelers should have moved to the boat when they felt the krill bumping the video camera as they were trying to run from the whales.</div>

I would have loved to be on that float line. Even better, I wish I had scuba gear on, and was down below the water watching the whole thing. <br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">About a year after we
started scuba diving, we heard rumors of this tiny fish called the Pacific
Spiny Lumpsucker (PSL). Everyone talked about these magical, adorable
fish with such affection and wonder, we decided we had to find them. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">We spent dive after dive
searching for this mythical fish, but no matter where we dove, and not matter
how much we searched, we could never find even a single PSL.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Sometimes it's easier to
find something underwater when you know exactly what it looks like, and where
it likes to hang out. One Saturday morning, we decided to take a tour of
the fish tanks at the Highline Community College <a href="http://mast.highline.edu/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Marine
Science and Technology</span></a> (MaST) Center at Redondo Beach in
DesMoines, Washington. We heard that they might have one of these
mysterious PSL's, and even though we weren't underwater, we were excited that
we were finally going to see this tiny fish. Unfortunately, luck was not with
us. MaST is a wonderful place to visit, and the staff there knows their
stuff, so the visit was nice but we did not see a PSL. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">We know they are real.
There is plenty of literature out there that describes these cute fish.
The Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker fish has an almost spherical head and body.
This fish has no scales. Their entire body is covered with spiny
lumps called tubercles. They also have a "specialized fringed sucker
disk on their stomach" in place of pelvic fins which allows them to
literally suction-cup themselves to objects such as eel grass. If you
look closely at the PSL in the image above, you can see that their fins are
translucent. This fish is celebrated in Asia, and is often the highlight
of parades, and trips to the aquarium.</span>.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Eventually, we gave up looking for them. There are so many wonderful things to see underwater, it was only a small disappointment. When students asked, we sent them to this YouTube video.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker - Victoria High School</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">One day, I joined a
couple of friends taking some specialized training with the </span><a href="http://www.hsascuba.com/" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Handicapped
Scuba Association</span></a><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"> (HSA). We were learning exactly what it
takes to scuba with people with disabilities. You talk about challenging!
In order for us to truly understand what would be required of us if we
chose to dive with an HSA certified diver, we did several dives in the pool
simulating the experience, first as the diver with a disability, and then
as a dive assistant guiding a diver with a disability. Once we convinced
our instructor that we had mastered these activities, it was time to put them
to the real test out in the cold waters of the Puget Sound. We were all
excited and scared to death to finish up our training in the cold water.
We finished the first round of dives where three of our masks were
completely blacked out, and three other divers gave us a tour. It was an
interesting experience being guided around, limiting the experience to what the
guide chose to place in my hands. Still, the water is a tranquil place, a
time to relax completely, listen to your own breathing, and float weightlessly.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Here's where things get
funny. The first dive was short, so we didn't need to change our tanks,
we just had to swap masks. It was my turn to guide my "blind"
student through the water. Things were going well for the first half of
the dive, until I spotted my first lumpsucker. I was so excited, I let my
divers hand go, and swam off to get a better look of this adorable swimming
fish the size of a quarter. I generally don't touch things underwater,
but taking a blind diver underwater means that you get to touch things, and
place them in the diver’s hands. Remembering my blind diver, I scooped
the PSL up and swam back taking care not to squish the fish. I carefully
placed the fish in my diver's hands. Moments later I carefully returned
my new found treasure to his home in the eel grass, and then finished the dive
leading my blind diver out of the water.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Once we were all out of
the water, we talked about the whole experience. My blind diver was able
to figure out everything I put in his hands, guessing that the PSL was a fish,
and super excited to find out the he actually got to hold one. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Since that
dive, I've been lucky enough to spot a few more of these beautiful little fish. Hope you are lucky enough to spot one someday.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

What a coincidence...we have a few rugs for sale.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back in 1997, my parents went shopping. They purchased sixteen rugs from The Golden Horn, in Seattle, WA. Half of their townhome was unfinished, and they were hoping to use several of these rugs once they completed the work on the townhome. As usual, life happens...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Long story short, they have six beautiful rugs that were purchased, set aside, and then never used, not even once. I have volunteered to help them sell the rugs. I've listed them on Craigslist a few times with no success. I'm very hesitant about putting them on eBay because of the fees both eBay and PayPal charge, so I'm going to try listing them here. If you see something you like, drop me a line, ask me a question, or make me an offer. I'm willing to mail the rug(s), at cost, and if you are local, you can simply pick them up.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This morning didn't go quite as I had planned it. I was supposed to be up by 6:00 am, picking blackberries by 7:00 am, and then cleaned up to spend the rest of the day with my parents.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My cat woke me up long before my alarm went off. Instead of getting up and getting going, I picked up my phone and started browsing Facebook, Pinterest, and got caught up with the news on the BBC app, and the King 5 app.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Plans changed again when I realized I might not want to work out at the end of the day, so I dressed for the gym...ha ha. I got downstairs, and once again, I was waylaid by my ADHD and the laundry. Instead of getting an early start, I was running late. I grabbed a bowl and a bucket, changed into appropriate clothes, and headed out to pick blackberries. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was supposed to take exit 101, but out of pure habit, I took exit 103. No big deal, I just continued down the road. As I drove through the intersection of Little Rock Road and Trosper, I noticed a few too many law enforcement vehicles in the vicinity with their lights on. I'm not a look-e-loo, so I just kept driving. Then, off to my right, I saw something I couldn't just ignore. Crouching beside his vehicle was an Olympia PD law enforcement officer with his assault rifle a the ready. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Turns out there was a man holding his ex-girlfriend hostage inside the USA Gastation. According to an article published by the King 5 news crew, "<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18.1875px;">after an all-day standoff with police and SWAT team members, the 50-year-old suspect was taken into police custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. The hostage was released without harm.</span>" </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
If I had stuck to my original plan, I would have missed all of the action. Everything happens for a reason, and I'm super happy the standoff ended well.</div>

Last month my daughter and I traveled to Libby, Montana to spend a week at a working cattle ranch. We loved it so much, we decided it would be nice to give back to the ranch with a well-deserved positive review. Eventually, we plan on posting a few short video clips of our adventure along with a daily journal style recap of the trip. For now, get to know <a href="http://mmgranch.net/" target="_blank">McGinnis Meadows Cattle and Guest Ranch</a>, and check out the review on <a href="http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45249-d1486777-r166436702-McGinnis_Meadows_Cattle_and_Guest_Ranch-Libby_Montana.html" target="_blank">TripAdvisor.</a></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I just watched the first four episodes of the new Netflix original, Orange Is The New Black, a comedy-drama series. I can't quite put my finger on the right word to describe this show. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first episode was highly inappropriate, but like a horrible accident, I could not look away, and I could not turn it off. Turns out, if you can get past the inappropriate parts, the show is pretty good.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, does a great job keeping a straight face through some pretty funny stuff. I couldn't do it. I would bust out laughing at almost everything. In an earlier phase of her life, Piper made some bad choices, and ten years later she is found guilt of her crime, and finds herself serving time in prison.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The producers do a good job developing the characters, and their background stories, and balance each episode with just the right amount of prison time and flashbacks. I don't even have a favorite character because they are all interesting. Well, everyone except Alex, played by Laura Prepon. They haven't done much with her character yet, and what little they ave done is strange, superficial, and pretentious. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Give the show a try. You'll fall in love with most of the characters. Of course, you have to have <a href="https://signup.netflix.com/" target="_blank">Netflix </a>to watch the show.<br />

Last month was a little hectic for us with two kids graduating from high school, one finishing up two years of college, our oldest son and his family moving back to Washington and moving in with us, packing for two different vacations, and then of course being gone for our vacations. I let a few things fall behind, but this news story is so crazy, I decided I just had to share it. Even crazier were some of the comments left by readers.<br />
<br />

<br />
A Battle Ground man received 10 tickets totaling $1,240 Sunday afternoon for packing his nine-seat Suburban with 17 people, nine of whom were children not wearing seat belts.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
The 37-year-old driver said he was en route to Rocky’s Pizza, 1901 W. Main St., when a Washington State Patrol trooper stopped him on Highway 502 in Dollars Corner. The trooper noticed the driver wasn’t wearing his seat belt and that the unbuckled passengers were all children, said Trooper Will Finn, spokesman for the patrol.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
The vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, legally carries nine people. A woman sat in the front passenger’s seat with a child next to her — both buckled — and fourteen kids were packed into the remaining six seats.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Had the vehicle rolled or been involved in a collision, the children could have moved about the cabin and been hurt, Finn said. Troopers occasionally run into motorists carrying an extra passenger, but eight extra people?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
“That’s a lot,” Finn said. “The trooper averted a potential tragedy.”</div>
<hr />
Eventually, other adults arrived and drove away with each of the kids in seat belts. What do you think? Crazy story right? If you think the story is crazy, what do you think about these comments?<br />

So dumb. How did humans survive for thousands of years riding on horseback, wagons and chariots, and for over a half a century riding in cars, without seat belts? When those old cars spontaneously flipped over, I'll bet all the passengers just instantly exploded. This trooper saved no lives and everyone knows it. They would've peacefully driven to the pizza shop and gone home, no big deal. But now the driver and the kids, boy, they know who's the boss. Their family might go hungry paying the tickets off, but that just means they can wrap that belt tighter over their empty tummies.</div>

I would like to introduce you to my daughter's parakeet, Zazu. He is a constant source of entertainment. He makes the most wonderful sounds, sings while he's asleep, and talks to us when he wants something. He also prances and dances, clucking, clicking, and then singing, and when he is super happy, he does the happy bird dance. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've read that the happy bird dance is something that all parakeets do, but people have a lot of different ideas on the reason for the dance. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Zazu grabs a bar on his playground, and holding on tightly, he rapidly flaps his wings. He looks like he's trying to lift his playground to carry it away. Some people say they do this when they are bored, or when they want attention, but a lot of people believe they do this when they are really happy. After a year of watching him, I'm pretty sure he does this when he's happy, so we call it the happy dance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Zazu used to live in a cage, but he quickly became part of the family, and we don't keep family in a cage, so for more than a year, Zazu has had free reign of the house. He's got a playground upstairs and downstairs, and voluntarily stays on these. Once in a while he ventures out, forages for food, or explores a new room, but most of the time, he's happy to hang out on his stand. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One day, he was sitting on my shoulder just chattering away and nibbling on my necklace. I grabbed a large tumbler and filled it with water. As I raised it to my mouth to take a drink, Zazu flew from my shoulder to the lip of the cup. I set the cup on the counter and watched Zazu dive in and out, sometimes drinking the water, and sometimes swimming in the water. He looked like he was having so much fun. When he was finished, he jumped down, shivered, and then flew back to his playground.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These days, we've figured out when he wants his cup bath, and every bath is still very entertaining. We used our GoPro and put together a short movie of Zazu's cup bath. Isn't he adorable!</div>

I've been trying to write these stories for six years, and now that I'm not diving I have a little bit of free time to catch up on things. First things first...octopus don't attack. We've seen octopus on hundreds of dives, and we have some great stories. This is a little bit about octopus, spotting them, and a story about one of our encounters with a sleepy Giant Pacific Octopus (GPO). </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We dive a lot of locations up and down the Puget Sound, but our favorite dive sites are Redondo Beach in </div>

DesMoines, WA, and Alki in Seattle, WA. In these two dive sites, I can guarantee an octopus sighting on every single dive, and have shared these sightings with many PADI Open Water students. What a great way to finish your training and start your life as a recreational scuba diver. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Red Octopus, the smaller of the two can be found out in the open during the day and at night, you just have to know what you are looking for. They do a great job of hiding as you approach and then pass over them, so the easiest way to spot them is to move slowly, and then casually sweep your flashlight side to side over the ground you just passed over. Once you spot your first red octopus, the rest will become easier to spot. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Red Octopus in the photo above was taken at Redondo Beach during the day, and was about the size of a football. We spotted this one in around twenty feet of water.</div>

Here's another trick. If you dive any site and come across squid eggs, you can be sure that the squid parents are somewhere close. Continue to scuba beyond the eggs until you look back and can barely see the eggs. Find something to do to stay warm while you wait for the squid to return. Fifteen to thirty seconds later, the parents will reappear, and then you can slowly move back to get a better look at the family. <br />
<br />
As long as you approach slowly, keeping you lights pointed in the direction of the eggs, you won't spook the parents, and they will regale you with some beautiful displays of color changes and water dances. They are brave creatures, and seem to be mesmerized by a diver's lights.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Getting back to the octopus story...The second type of octopus you'll find in the Puget Sound is the Giant Pacific Octopus. The photos on the right were taken at around 7:00 am on a dive at Redondo Beach. This GPO can be found under a boat that rests in about 40 to 60 feet of water, depending on the tide. Can you see the slightly open eye in the photo on the right?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We've seen this octopus hundreds of times, but always under the small boat where she has dug out a large den to rest when she's not out gathering her meals. Steve and I really wanted to see this octopus out in the open. According to <a href="http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/invertebrates/giant-pacific-octopus/" target="_blank">National Geographic</a>, GPO's unt primarily at night, so we started a several month adventure to try to find her out in the open. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We started diving every Friday night at different hours of the night and eventually every hour of the morning on Saturday's. There were several dives where we found her den empty, but we were never able to spot her out in the open, so I had to settle for under the boat photos. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can clearly see how long her tentacles are, and how large her suckers are. She is a calm, gentle octopus, and seems to handle annoying divers and their flashlights well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
On this particular dive, we were excited because it looked like she had just returned to her den. She was hanging out near the opening, close enough for us to reach out and touch her if we decided to be dumb enough to do that. Instead, I backed up a bit and started taking these photos. She was extremely active, moving every tentacle non-stop. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Suddenly, and lighting fast, she reached out and grabbed my camera, almost pulling it out of my hand. I wasn't too worried about it, the camera housing was too large to be dragged under the boat, and my left hand was covering the housing latch. However, a moment later I could see I was in for an unexpected treat. Still holding my camera with one tentacle, she had flanked me on my right with another tentacle. I felt something on my face and could see her tentacle checking me out. I bit down hard on my regulator, and grabbed my mask with my right hand. <br />
<br />
What seemed like five minutes was over seconds later. After showing me she was the boss, she retreated into her den to settle in for the day. I've taken dozens of photos of her, but the photos I took on this dive were by far the most memorable.</div>

The tornado flattened homes, tossed cars through the air and crushed at least two schools full of children. These numbers are expected to grow as rescuers continue to search for all of the children and teachers in the schools and communities.</span></span></span><br />
